The X social media platform has announced significant changes to its blocking feature. Users who are blocked will still be able to see the content of the person who blocked them, but they will be restricted from engaging—such as liking, commenting, or sharing. This adjustment, according to X’s official statement, is aimed at boosting “transparency” on the platform and preventing misuse of the blocking function for harmful purposes. However, those concerned about privacy are advised to set their profiles to private mode.
Elon Musk, who acquired X in 2022, has been a vocal critic of the blocking feature. Since taking over, he has called for adjustments, suggesting that blocking could often be used inappropriately. This recent update might also lead to complications with App Store and Google Play policies, which enforce certain standards for harassment and user safety.
Critics have pointed out that this isn’t the first time X (formerly Twitter) has attempted changes to the blocking feature. In 2013, a similar experiment allowed blocked users to view and interact with content, but the feature was swiftly rolled back due to widespread backlash. Given past experiences, the latest move has raised debates on whether X will face new challenges with app store regulations, and if the update will indeed promote the transparency it claims to aim for.
Media reports suggest that App Store and Google Play policies might be violated due to these changes, as these platforms require social media apps to have mechanisms in place to control harassment or bullying. For now, both tech giants have not issued any formal responses regarding this adjustment.
